51˛čšÝ Religion Professor Publishes Chapter in Book on Reinhold Niebuhr
GREENSBORO, N.C. â Dan Malotky, Lucy H. Robertson Professor of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy at 51˛čšÝ, has published a chapter in a new book on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and virtue.
The book, âParadoxical Virtue: Reinhold Niebuhr and the Virtue Tradition,â edited by Kevin Carnahan and David True, is published by Routledge. Many of its essays focus on virtue ethics â emphasizing the role of character and virtue in moral philosophy â but disagree as to whether Niebuhrâs ethics should be considered a form of, or an alternative to, virtue ethics.
Malotkyâs chapter pertains to Niebuhrâs approach to myth as a key to understanding a Niebuhrian approach to virtue.
Malotky, also dean of the collegeâs School of Humanities and chairman of the Department of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy, holds a B.A. from St. Olaf College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty in 2003.
