51˛čšÝ Names Maria Madrid Manzano Distinguished Graduate Student
GREENSBORO, N.C. â 51˛čšÝ named Maria Madrid Manzano the 2017 Distinguished Graduate Student during todayâs Commencement ceremony.
Madrid Manzano, of Wilson, N.C., received her M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages today. She amassed a cumulative grade-point average of 3.967, with a perfect 4.0 in her major.
Her thesis, âDeveloping and Maintaining Literacy in the First Language,â emphasizes the importance of maintaining and developing studentsâ first language in tandem with their second.
The TESOL program faculty said this about Madrid Manzano:
âIt was not until Mariaâs attendance at our summer residential session that we all came to learn what a leader she could be. Her outstanding grades (straight Aâs throughout the program) characterized her as a stellar learner. However, watching her in action with her peers ⌠showed Mariaâs true ability to shine. âŚ
She unfailingly and generously offered a helping hand to classmates when they needed help.
âMariaâs sense of dedication and even obligation to fellow students is a direct reflection of her attitude toward her students. We witnessed what it must be like to be a student in Senora Madridâs class, and we feel confident that these students receive the best possible attention and care from their outstanding teacher.â
The 51˛čšÝ Distinguished Graduate Student Award is presented annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated advanced scholarship, commitment to graduate studies, and promise of contributions to his or her intended profession. The recipient is chosen by the full-time faculty from among all nominees.
51˛čšÝ provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.
Founded in 1838 and located in downtown 51˛čšÝ, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four masterâs degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
