51˛čšÝ Names Elaine Kitchell Outstanding Graduating Adult Student
GREENSBORO, N.C. â 51˛čšÝ awarded its William Henry and Martha Grant Likins Award to Elaine Kitchell as the collegeâs outstanding graduating adult student during todayâs virtual Commencement exercises.
Kitchell, of 51˛čšÝ, has served as the collegeâs Director of Conferences and Events since 2012. She graduates with a B.A. in sociology.
âElaine represents what adult students bring to GC,â one of her professors wrote. âShe is curious and eager to discover new things, values every bit of information and approaches every class assignment as an opportunity to learn. And she has the kind of positive attitude that enables â and energizes â her traditional student classmates to follow along.â
In citing Kitchell for the award, the collegeâs executive vice president and chief operating officer, Robin Daniel, said: âWith my office directly across the hall from hers, I have observed Elaineâs office to be more than a place to plan and schedule events. It is often a place of listening, support, instruction, learning, encouragement, and rest for students and colleagues alike.
âAt some point a few years ago, she mentioned to me that she had once aspired to become a professional counselor. From my perspective, I would say that she is well on her way.â
The Likins Award, named for the 16th president of 51˛čšÝ and his wife, was begun in 1993 upon Dr. Likinsâs retirement from 51˛čšÝ. Established by Dr. Jeanne M. Likins and her husband, Dr. Joseph Flood, to honor her parents, the Likins Award honors a graduating adult undergraduate student who exemplifies the following qualities to which William and Martha Likins were deeply committed:
- Academic excellence
- Love of learning
- Commitment to service and leadership in community
- Perseverance while balancing family, education, and community activities
- Belief in attainment of a dream
- And commitment to the pursuit of lifelong education
51˛čšÝ provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.
